Help to protect local wildlife sanctuary – developer’s appeal now withdrawn

30th September 2024

For the third time in 10 years, developers were attempting to build 14 houses on the greenfield land at Smock Alley and Haglands Lane in West Chiltington, West Sussex, RH20 2QX.

If concreted over, two fields which have re-wilded over many decades would be lost. These fields have become important for local wildlife of insects, birds, bats, badgers, foxes and deer. Dormice are also believed to be present.

This site has already been rejected three times by Horsham District Council and twice at Appeal by Government Inspectors but the decision against the development is going to appeal again. The deadline for representations is 10 October so the local community needs your support now.

Good news!

The developer has withdrawn the appeal (reference: APP/Z3825/W/24/3349208) by:Castle Properties Ltd for development on the land West of Smock Alley, Haglands Lane, West Chiltington. .

CPRE Sussex helped the community’s fight against the de4velopment, particularly with our lead planning volunteer (Dr Roger F Smith) researching and writing our Third Party representation objecting to the appeal. CPRE Sussex welcomes the withdrawal of this appeal in Horsham District. However, we anticipate the developer may resubmit their application, and we will be prepared to respond accordingly. Our goal remains to influence any future plans to ensure that if development is approved, it is done in a way that is more considerate of the local environment and community need.
